What to do if you have given your SSN or EIN to scam artist

  1. Get your free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com and check for any accounts or charges you don't recognize. You can order a free report from each of the three credit bureaus once a year.
  2. Consider placing a free credit freeze. A credit freeze restricts access to your credit report and can make it more difficult for identity thieves to open new credit lines in your name. Credit freezes do not affect your credit score, prevent you from getting your free annual credit report, or prevent a fraudster from making charges on existing accounts. They also do not stop you from getting prescreened offers of credit in the mail or online. If you place a freeze, you'll have to lift the freeze before you apply for a new credit card or cell phone - or any service that requires a credit check. A credit freeze does not provide the level of protection that an identity theft protection service can. If you would like to find out more about Identity Theft Protection plans by speaking with a live agent from Identity Guard, call 1-855-571-4071. If you decide not to place a credit freeze or to use an identity theft protection service, you could also look at placing a fraud alert. Link
  3. Try to file your taxes early - before a scammer can. Tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social Security number to get a tax refund or a job. Respond right away to letters from the IRS.
  4. Don't believe anyone who calls and says you'll be arrested unless you pay for taxes or debt - even if they have part or all of your Social Security number, or they say they're from the IRS.
  5. Continue to check your credit reports at annualcreditreport.com. You can order a free report from each of the three credit reporting agencies once a year.
  6. Protect yourself moving forward: Because your digital and financial identities are at constant risk, you should consider purchasing an identity theft protection plan. You can review coverage and pricing available from Identity Guard here:
